It is sometimes possible for you to negotiate your own credit card settlements with companies to whom you owe unsecured debt. While using a settlement company may be more effective, there are times when you will not be able to afford the fees, or may have other reasons why you’d like to attempt the settlement on your own.
One of the first steps to take in this situation is to write a letter of intent, or a settlement request letter to the company in question, offering them a settlement. Normally prior to your doing this you will want to set aside some money in order to pay them what you promise. Although a few companies may permit you to make a few equal payments to pay off the balance, most of them will want the funds in one lump sum.
A settlement letter should outline your exact proposal, as well as explain the situation that impels the letter to them. It should give exact dates when you will have the money available to pay them, along with anything else that you might like from the company, such as removal of negative comments on your credit report.
Always refer to your account number when you write the settlement letter to the company in question and always offer your name, current address and telephone number. A verbal agreement to the terms of your letter however, should not be accepted. Always wait until you receive a written response or agreement prior to sending your funds to the company in question.
Your settlement letter might take the form shown below:
Name
Date
RE:Account Number
Dear Sir or Ma’am;
Having undergone a period of time when it was not possible to make timely payments to your company my account with you (account number) is now in default.
I find myself again in a position where I am able to pay something toward the settlement of this account. It is my hope that paying (the amount) might be considered payment in full toward the monies owed to your company.
I am able to pay( amount and date) In return I ask that this be considered payment in full toward the account listed above and that any negative comments on this account be removed from the credit bureau.
While I do not have an infinite amount of funds to accomplish this, I’ve been able to reach an agreement with other companies and would like to pay you at least part of what I owe in fairness to your company.
If this settlement offer is acceptable to you, please advise me by signing the letter and returning a copy to me at which time I will forward the agreed upon amount to you.
Sincerely,
Your Name
If you try in good faith to reach an agreement, many credit card companies will settle with you. Once you have received their written approval of your settlement letter, stick to your agreement and forward the funds to them immediately. Settling your own debts is possible in many cases, if you stay in touch with your creditors and work with them.
